If I ever did see one, Maika Monroe and horror thrillers are a perfect pairing. The 2 go together like a Charli XCX album and summer or a white T-shirt and denim. Monroe delivered a stellar breakout efficiency in the 2014 instant cult timeless It Follows if you remember. In the film, she starred as Jamie “Jay” Height, a teenage woman who is pursued by a supernatural entity that acquires her following her very first sexual encounter. (A decade later, a highly expected sequel is in the works.) Then there was Villains with Hollywoods resident dark prince Bill Skarsgård, the cat-and-mouse thriller The Stranger, and 2022s Significant Other. But Monroe in this months chilling horror movie Longlegs simply might take the cake. Its a performance that has many calling the actress the very best scream queen of our generation. I definitely cant argue that.Following a brilliant, monthslong marketing campaign, Longlegs strikes movie theaters today, and with an ideal critic score, it will undoubtedly go down as one the years best horror movies. Directed by Osgood Perkins, Longlegs follows a serial killer who has actually been haunting households for over a decade and the rookie FBI representative designated to his case. Monroe plays the socially uncomfortable yet clever Agent Lee Harker with a unrecognizable and bone-chilling Nicholas Cage in the titular role. Played out over three well-paced and unnerving acts, the movie deliberately gets under your skin as a strange case soaked in occult scary takes shape. Its quite literally the stuff of nightmares.Just before the Fourth of July holiday, I got on a call with our preferred last woman to speak about the makings of an excellent horror movie, how Monroe convinced Perkins that she was the best Lee Harker, and Cages scary-good efficiency.( Image credit: Myles Hendrik; Styling: Situationist leading and trousers; Port Tanger sunglasses; Mara Paris earrings; Alexis Bittar cuff; Lucasheva shoes) How did this project make its method to you? Did you understand writer/director Osgood Perkins?I knew Oz, but he wasnt truly on my radar. I was sent this script, and it was simply immediate, my love for it, which doesnt occur frequently. I check out a lot of scripts, and theres a lot of actually bad ones. This was among those where I resembled, “Oh my god, Im absolutely obsessed. What do I require to do to get this?” I went in and met Oz, and we had a great conversation. He explained his vision for this world he wished to create, and I resembled, “Im in!” But later on, I got a call, and my team was like, “Oz enjoyed you, but he does not think youre ideal for this.” I was like, “But I need to do this. Ill do anything.” I wound up sending out in a tape. I picked a couple scenes from the script and sent in a tape, and thats how I got the part.Youre like, “Let me show you incorrect!” Thats my job. Im an actor. Youll most likely see from this interview [that] Im really various from Lee. But thats my task, to tap into other kinds of people.Something informs me you understand an excellent horror movie when you see or check out one. What stuck out to you about this story in specific and/or the world Perkins was creating?I love crime thrillers. Silence of the Lambs was one of those films that is memorable to me. Reading this script, I saw so lots of similarities, yet it felt new at the exact same time and felt incredibly special. I believe it was a comparable sensation when I read It Follows. Theres a sensation of fond memories and this sensation that I think is really good to have, something that feels familiar yet totally turns itself over. I like a period piece. Going back to the 90s– the style, no cell phones, none of that to inform a story– I was simply like, “Oh my god.” And after that, naturally, Nicholas Cage.Okay, lets talk about Nicholas Cage since this is such a scary-good performance from him. What was your response to seeing him as Longlegs for the very first time?Oh, it was stunning due to the fact that you do not see Nick at all. Nick is an icon. Nick is … Everyone understands Nick Cage and his voice and his quirks and his aura, which no longer exists in Longlegs. Simply even from an actors perspective, it was unbelievable being 2 feet away enjoying him do this. Hes had some unbelievable performances, however I feel like this is among a kind for him. Somehow, with all his insane roles hes done, he still continues to amaze us all.Did you go to set and view him when you werent shooting?Actually, Oz didnt want us to fulfill. He didnt desire any sort of discussion prior, and I didnt see any of the makeup tests or photos. He made sure everybody on set kept it away from me till I walked into that scene. … On the day, they put him in the room. It was all set up. They had three cams, and they just brought me to the door, and he called, “Action!” I opened the door, and the electronic cameras were rolling, and thats when I saw him for the first time.Thats dazzling. Its funny since my next question was going to have to do with that scene and how the 2 of you prepped for it, but there was none of that. How did you personally prep for such an extreme moment?I really desired to be entirely open due to the fact that I really had no idea what he was going to bring. And theres only a lot prep you can do. Obviously, I would like to know my lines like the back of my hand and simply be as present as possible, which was not tough since all of it was new. Certainly, a lot is revealed in that scene. Lee goes through a great deal of stuff gradually being given the surface, so it was a lot. Working throughout from that was incredible.I desire to talk about the options you made in building Lees mannerisms. Shes very blocked, and the audience instantly gets her awkwardness from your physicality.I love functions where a lot isnt said. I believe that … can be more effective in moments, but I guess all of it began with returning to the beginning of Lee and her childhood. Undoubtedly, theres a great deal of trauma and an extremely particular scenario that happens when shes around 9. When a kid goes through a severe trauma it sort of stunts their growth, its said. It leaves them at that age, so maturity is doing not have, which I find remarkable. I believe they state that about kids who enter movie at a young age. It stunts their psychological growth since its an injury in a sense. Its a shock to the system.I just believed that was super intriguing and trying to bring in this, I dont know, awkwardness and immaturity into the function. It began there, and then the first couple of days on set, we shot the scene with the other young FBI agent where we go door to door. A lot was discovered on that day due to the fact that you see the entire spectrum of her. Its this awkwardness with this other young kid. Hes trying to talk, and shes plainly unpleasant. Then its that intuitiveness that taps in, and shes feeling something and senses something pulling her toward something. And then you see this strength in her. We covered the premises, and it was just the best first day, and a lot was found that day.
